Night in the Trees: Slow Living at Warredal, Belgium

On The Journal

Tucked into the quiet of Belgium’s National Park Hoge Kempen, this off-grid forest resort invites you to slow down, not in theory, but in practice.

There is no Wi-Fi here. No television. No distractions except birdsong, candlelight, and the hush of pine needles brushing against your cabin window. We stayed in one of their treehouses, a minimal, wood-clad shelter on stilts, where childhood dreams of secret hideouts met the calm clarity of adult retreat.

No switches to flick, no screens to scroll. Just lanterns, soft bedding, and the crackle of dry leaves under your boots. In the absence of digital noise, something beautiful returns: presence.

Each cabin comes with the essentials: a warm bed, a tiny kitchenette, a small bathroom, and a sitting area for quiet mornings with coffee. Electricity is limited, lanterns and candles set the evening aglow.

Back-to-Basics Comfort

Some cabins offer a private hot tub under the stars. Highly recommended. A few of the Cosy Cabins (those without hot tubs) welcome dogs. Ours joined us on the deck, watching pinecones fall like tiny meteors from above.

A FEW HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Adventure Park — Rope bridges, ziplines, and climbing courses offer a dose of childlike thrill.
  • Midget Golf & Forest Trails — Slower options if you’re here to wander.
  • Nearby Day Trips — Local eateries, vintage shops, and hikes on the Dutch border complete the escape.

WHAT TO PACK

  • A flashlight — outlets are limited. Save your phone battery.
  • Hiking boots + backup pair — in case of rain or blisters.
  • Natural bug spray — Para’kito works wonders, and it’s pet-safe.
  • Reusable water bottle — I brought my Larq; it’s self-cleaning and beautiful.
  • Fuzzy socks, a hat, and something analog to read.

FINAL THOUGHTS

There’s something humbling about living with only what you need. Warredal isn’t luxury in the traditional sense — but it is luxurious in time, in quiet, in space to think.

It reminded me of the treehouse I once borrowed from my cousin as a girl — only now, I was returning with intention. With reverence. And with the deep kind of rest that only silence can offer.
